A report from Newzoo revealed that consumer spending and gameplay data indicated that the top 10 played games on the PC, PS, Xbox, and Switch consisted of games that are over seven years old on average. Ranked by average monthly active users (MAU), Newzoo found that, despite the emergence of newer titles, these games continued to significantly command players' attention and engagement.
To note, Fortnite, which released in 2017, ranked first overall across all platforms. Among the other games occupying the top ranks are enduring classics such as GTA 5, Minecraft, Counter-Strike 2, Roblox, Apex Legends, Fall Guys, Valorant, and Call of Duty. Interestingly, Newzoo's data revealed that 60% of playtime was devoted to these games.
The report noted that while fewer publishers are capturing a larger share of player engagement and revenue, players continue to explore a wide array of genres. However, even among games under the 'new' game category, 23% comprises annualized sequels such as FIFA and Madden.
The report also provided forecasts for the gaming market's growth trajectory. From 2015 to 2021, PC and console revenue experienced rapid expansion, reaching $94.3 billion, with growth exceeding 50%. Looking ahead, the market was projected to grow by an estimated $14.1 billion from the end of 2023 to 2026, driven by factors such as an expanding console install base and anticipated releases like the rumored new Nintendo Switch 2.
