After 7 years of its official unveiling, the sequel to Ubisoft's critically acclaimed action-adventure, Beyond Good & Evil 2, has been confirmed to still be in production, now under new leadership.
Ubisoft Hasn't Stopped Development on Beyond Good & Evil 2
Fawzi Mesmar Announces Role as Beyond Good & Evil 2 Creative Director
Despite near radio silence from Ubisoft, development on Beyond Good and Evil 2 appears to still be in progress with the recent update from Ubisoft VP Global Creative Fawzi Mesmar announcing that he has "joined Beyond Good & Evil 2 as Creative Director." Mesmar made the announcement today on his LinkedIn profile: "Today I’m glad to share that I joined Beyond Good & Evil 2 as Creative Director. I have been working with those peeps for years now on this ambitious game and witnessed their talent firsthand."
Mesmar is known for his works on games including Star Wars Outlaws, Star Wars Battlefront II, Battlefield V, Battlefield 2024, Persona 3 Social, and much more.
He continued, "I am standing on the shoulders of creative giants that have supported the team before me, and I look forward to continuing to craft a game that is truly unique for players to enjoy." So, yes, Beyond Good & Evil 2 is beyond the grasps of death and doom.
In a statement to Kotaku, Ubisoft confirmed the ongoing development and internal move, saying "With more than 20 years as an award-winning game designer and creative director, he’s been instrumental in the successful launch of over 20 video games," adding that in his new role, Mesmar is to build upon the vision of the game's previous director, the late Emile Morel, who passed away last year. According to recent reports, Beyond Good & Evil 2 has passed an internal milestone and received positive feedback from Ubisoft's higher-ups. While there’s still a long road ahead for the game, it seems to be continually bouncing back from years of issues and struggles within the company.
It was in 2008 that Beyond Good and Evil 2 was confirmed to be in its pre-production phase, however, it was only formally announced by Ubisoft with a trailer premiere in 2017. The project is being spearheaded by Ubisoft Montpellier and, though much not is known about it, the sequel looks to present "the spirit of the first game." Beyond Good & Evil launched in 2003 and follows the adventures of Jade as she works to unravel a sinister alien conspiracy, taking players on a narrative-filled action-adventure journey through the world called Hillys.
