"And the Most Iconic Video Games Character of all time is... Lara Croft! 👑" BAFTA announced on social media today. The poll listed 20 characters from classic game titles such as FF7, Crash Bandicoot, Metal Gear Solid, and more.
"These characters, and the games in which they star, boast a collective 44 BAFTA Games Awards between them over the past two decades, and make up some of the best-loved entries into the canon of video game history, and some of the most memorable characters of any medium," highlighted BAFTA.
In the runner-up spot stands Mario, followed by Agent 47 from the Hitman series, and Sonic the Hedgehog. Arguably lower on the list are Pac-Man, Link from Zelda, Pikachu, and Cloud.

While BAFTA hailed Lara Croft as a "generation-spanning heroine," the poll results sparked a debate among players. Some have adamantly defended Mario’s rightful place at the top, with one player expressing, "I know it's all opinions blah blah and Lara Croft is possibly top 10. I don't care what country, what planet or what universe you are from, the most iconic video game character is Mario and that is undisputed."
Others completely tore down the list, with one user commenting, "Very rarely do I read one of these silly lists at all, and this is the first time where I've literally laughed aloud as I read it." A number of users also offered their two cents, saying that a couple of characters in BAFTA's list would be unrecognizable to to people outside the gaming sphere.
