Avowed's game director has given an in-depth sneak preview of the complexities the game looks to offer as it makes its highly anticipated launch next year, 2025.
Avowed Packs In Complex Gameplay and Multiple Endings
Vying For Political Control in The Living Lands Is As Complex As It Gets
Obsidian Entertainment's upcoming fantasy adventure title Avowed looks to give players "moment-to-moment opportunities to express and explore where they're leaning," with its complex multi-ending gameplay. In a conversation with outlet Game Developer, game director Carrie Patel remarked that every decision you make in Avowed, big or small, is designed to culminate in a rounded experience overall.
"It's about giving the player moment-to-moment opportunities to express and explore where they're leaning," Patel explained. "You slow down and try to notice each moment of your experience," she further said, additionally remarking that Avowed makes you answer questions such as "When am I excited? When am I curious? When is my attention starting to wane? What's drawing me from moment to moment?"
Patel added that the choices and outcomes in Avowed "are going to depend on what you're able to find" as you explore the intricate world of Eora, vying for political control in the region called The Living Lands. "I've enjoyed finding the stories that thread both of those worlds together," she added.
Players step into the shoes of an envoy from the Aedyran Empire to unravel the mysteries of a spiritual plague, all the while furthering your political agenda. "Giving players things to dig into—that's what makes it meaningful roleplay," Patel further remarked. "It's about who you want to be in this world, and how these situations prepare you to express that."
On top of the complex RPG mechanics, the game promises strategic combat that blends magic, swords, and guns. "The abilities you can scope into and the weapon loadouts you can choose give you a very different experience each time you play," Patel said.
Moreover, Patel has confirmed to IGN multitude of endings may contain "a lot of different combinations" of each. She explained, "I can tell you our ending slides number in the double digits, and you can end up with a lot of different combinations of them." She added, "This is an Obsidian game, so your ending really is the sum total of your choices across the game, across a lot of pieces of content depending on what you encountered and what you did when you found it."
