Assassin’s Creed Shadows, formerly known as Assassin's Creed codenamed Red, is Ubisoft's highly anticipated and highly-kept-secret latest premium flagship title from the Assassin's Creed series. Its first cinematic trailer will be released on May 15, 2024 at 9:00 a.m. PT / 12:00 p.m. ET, and will give fans their first in-depth look at the latest installment in the Assassin’s Creed franchise, which will be set in Feudal era Japan.

The Ubisoft Store's gallery section also teased fans with a red image containing cryptic numbers and messages, hinting at more details about what Assassin’s Creed Shadows has to offer. This next major game in the franchise comes from Ubisoft Quebec, following the success of 2020's Assassin's Creed Valhalla. Although specific platforms and a release date have yet to be officially confirmed, Assassin’s Creed Shadows could very well launch on PC and next-gen platforms such as the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, based on previous AC releases.

First announced in 2022, Assassin’s Creed Shadows promises to deliver an immersive experience where fans can live out their "full Shinobi (covert agents in feudal Japan) fantasy," according to developer Marc-Alexis Cote, and will represent the future of the open-world RPG games in Assassin's Creed.

The initial 30-second reveal trailer for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, shown during the Ubisoft Forward 2022 event, introduced the new setting in Japan taking place during the Feudal Era where Shoguns, or military rulers, held more power in society than the emperor and the imperial court.

It also revealed the new assassin character, decked out in The Assassin Order robes, armed with a short blade, and the iconic assassin hidden blade on their left hand. Likewise, the reveal trailer hinted at the return of the Animus, an in-game technology used to communicate and interact with ancestral memories, and consequently, the narrative split between past and present events of Assassin's Creed lore.
