Alleged Hacker Did It For 'Fun'

In their statement posted today on Twitter (X), Respawn emphasized that game and player security are their top priorities, and that the ALGS North American regional finals competition will be on an indefinite pause so that they can address the issue.

The hacking and security breach involved two competitors' PCs being compromised and injected with cheats mid-match. While the exact cause of the incident has yet to be determined, Epic Games dismissed claims of security vulnerabilities in the game's anti-cheat program, Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC).

Respawn confirmed that they have deployed the first of a series of updates to protect the Apex Legends player community. "Our teams have deployed the first of a layered series of updates to protect the Apex Legends player community and create a secure experience for everyone. Thank you for your patience."

Apex Legends Security Analyst, Conor Ford, assured players that the team is actively working on the issue. "All I can say is, the care and love shown from parties involved makes me thankful for the coworkers and devs on this game," Ford wrote on Twitter (X).

In an interview with TechCrunch published today, the alleged hacker known as Destroyer2009 stated that the hacking was done "just for fun" and to draw attention to vulnerabilities that needed fixing. However, Destroyer2009 declined to divulge specific details about the hacking techniques used or the vulnerabilities exploited. The hacking "never went outside of the game," they clarified futher.

"Just imagine if it wasn’t a joke and we didn’t put any memes in the cheat, I’m pretty sure you can ruin someone’s career if they had a cheat pop up on a tournament," the hacker told the news site.
