Amazon laid off 180 of its employees from its video game division. Read on to learn more about their decision, their official memo, previous layoffs from Amazon, and more.
Amazon Cutting 180 Jobs
Restructuring Efforts
Amazon laid off 180 employees from its video game division. These jobs comprise the entire Crown Channel, an Amazon-backed Twitch channel, and the Game Growth Team. The motivation behind this lies in Amazon’s attempt to refocus their efforts around Prime Gaming.
An internal email received by employees from Christoph Hartmann, the VP of Amazon Games, explains why. “We’ve listened to our customers and we know delivering free games every month is what they want most, so we are refining our Prime benefit to increase our focus there. With these changes in our business approach come changes to our resourcing, resulting in the elimination of just over 180 roles,” he wrote.
Third Wave of Amazon Layoffs This Year
This is the third time this year that Amazon has laid off a large number of its employees. In January and March, the company laid off 18,000 and 9,000 people respectively.
Amazon almost broke their record for its high-profit margins in Q3 of 2023. However, it appears to have come at the expense of its 27,000+ ex-employees.
