Unity’s Latest Annual Market Report Reveals State of AI Use in Industry

62% of Game Studios Use AI in Their Workflows

According to a recent survey of over 300 respondents by market research firm CIST, nearly two-thirds of game studios use artificial intelligence in some of their workflows. This survey was carried out on behalf of game engine maker Unity and was released as a part of their latest annual market report, which was published earlier this week.

"62% of the studios we surveyed said they used AI in their workflows, mainly to prototype quickly and for concepting, asset creation, and worldbuilding," reported Unity. "Studios are spending more time in development before earning returns on their investments, and they need to find ways to get to market faster."

According to Unity’s report, the average game development time from conception to launch has increased from 218 days to 304, comparing development cycles from 2022 to 2023. This has all but necessitated the use of AI to streamline a process that’s lengthening in response to rising industry standards.

"Players are setting the bar higher these days, and this has an impact on production," said Triangle Studios CEO Timothy Vanherberghen. "Studios need to make sure that they can actually reach the expectations of those players, and production becomes more costly and takes more time."

Of the surveyed studios who admitted to using AI in their workflows, 71% reported that using AI had improved their delivery and operations. Unity’s report also revealed that generative AI was mostly being used to create artwork and game levels, accelerate coding processes, test gameplay loops, and automate narrative elements.

It’s currently unclear to what extent AI will be used in the video game industry within the next year, but if this trend is any indication, there may be a rise in AI-generated content within next year’s titles to combat the rising development times, hopefully resulting in quicker game releases.
