"Built from the ground up, Elsewhere Entertainment is a premier and standalone studio dedicated to establishing an environment that inspires bold and diverse ideas," Activision stated in their announcement of a new internal studio, Elsewhere Entertainment, dedicated to an all-new narrative-based and genre-defining AAA franchise. "The team’s underlying mission encourages everyone to explore and collaborate creatively to craft a franchise with an enduring legacy that resonates far beyond games."

The team at Elsewhere Entertainment consists of storytelling experts with impressive credits from popular games such as The Last of Us, Uncharted, The Witcher, Cyberpunk 2077, Destiny, Tom Clancy’s The Division, and Far Cry. While details about the new franchise were kept under wraps, job descriptions on the Activision site hinted that the studio is gearing up for a long-term project, with plans to work on the game "for the next 5 years and beyond."

The formation of Elsewhere Entertainment came following Microsoft's acquisition of Activision and shortly after significant restructuring within Microsoft's Xbox division. Xbox recently closed three studios under the Bethesda Softworks publisher, namely Arkane Austin, Alpha Dog Studios, and Tango Gameworks, and reallocated the Roundhouse Games team to work on The Elder Scrolls Online under ZeniMax Online Studios.

Xbox Game Studios chief Matt Booty explained these changes were made to "create capacity to increase investment in other parts of our portfolio and focus on our priority games." Some employees from the closed studios will transition to other game studios within Microsoft.
