Nintendo Financial Review Shows Significant Process
Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Brings Significant Profits
Nintendo's outstanding sales and profitability in the first quarter of this fiscal year have set a high bar for the rest of the year. The Super Mario Bros. Movie and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom were released simultaneously, contributing to the company's success. As a result, Nintendo significantly increased its forecasted full-year earnings.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, released on May 12, emerged as a standout performer, selling a staggering 18.51 million units during the first quarter. This substantial surge in software unit sales contributed to the company's overall revenue. It also positively impacted hardware sales, driving global hardware sell-through higher than the previous fiscal year's first quarter.
Nintendo Switch - OLED Increases Hardware Sales
One notable factor behind the increase in hardware sales was the Nintendo Switch ‒ OLED Model launch, which includes a special edition themed after The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Released at the end of April, this new console variant found immense popularity amongst gamers and fans of the legendary franchise.
The widespread adoption of the Nintendo Switch hardware and sustained engagement from avid gamers have further boosted sales of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Approximately half of the Nintendo software sales sold this fiscal year are attributed to this title alone. The game's appeal seems to extend beyond existing fans, with a growing percentage of purchases coming from newcomers to the franchise.
Other Factors For Sales Growth
Digital sales also saw a significant surge, increasing by an impressive 35.9% year-over-year to reach ¥119.6 billion. This robust performance in digital sales has led to it accounting for 47.3% of the total software sales for Nintendo's dedicated video game platform.
A combination of factors contributed to the rise in digital sales. The yen depreciation in foreign exchange markets amplified the sales amount when converted to yen, benefitting digital revenues. Additionally, the downloadable versions of packaged software, such as The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, proved popular among gamers. Sales related to Nintendo Switch Online, the company's subscription-based online service, also witnessed growth.
