Developers Still Hope For New Entry In The Future

Dead Space 4 might either be indefinitely postponed or never coming, as Dead Space creator Glen Schofield shared in an interview that EA rejected their proposal for the next title in the acclaimed sci-fi horror franchise. In an online interview with Dan Allen Gaming on his YouTube channel, Schofield, alongside fellow developers Christopher Stone and Bret Robbins, revealed that Dead Space 4 is a no-go.

The topic started when Stone shared that his son recently got to play Dead Space and loved it to the point that he begged Stone with a "Please tell me you’re making another Dead Space game!" to which the developer could only chuckle and reply, "I wish."

The three then said that they, in fact, tried to pitch the idea of a fourth Dead Space entry to EA earlier this year. However, the publisher seemed to have immediately shut the developer team down. "We didn’t go too deep. They just said ‘We’re not interested right now, we appreciate it blah blah blah’ and we know who to talk to, so we didn’t go take it any further," Schofield recalled. "And we respected their opinion—they know their numbers and what they have to ship." Stone also added that the industry is in "a weird place right now" where people are hesitant to take chances on things—especially a decade-old franchise.

While Dead Space is a well-known series and last year’s remake opened to positive reception, even garnering an 89 on Metacritic as well as a Very Positive review rating on Steam, the remake’s success may not be satisfactory enough for EA, who may be unwilling to take risks on a new title of an old IP. "They know their numbers and what they have to ship," Schofield added.

Nevertheless, the three remain optimistic that some time in the future, Dead Space 4 will definitely come out. "Maybe one day, I think we’d all love to do it," Stone continued, with his colleagues nodding along. They’ve got some ideas and would come back to working on Dead Space 4 in a heartbeat—though maybe not right now. Robbins, Schofield, and Stone are no longer working in one studio together, and each have their own ongoing project. But the ambition for the next Dead Space entry is still fresh, and perhaps soon enough, the public will once again see the well-regarded horror title be revived.
