Rise of the Ronin Overview
Rise of the Ronin is an open world action game developed by Team Ninja with support from KOEI TECMO GAMES. It was exclusively released for the PlayStation 5 on March 22, 2024, and launched for the PC nearly a year later on March 10, 2025.
Rise of the Ronin is set in 1863 during the years of the Bakumatsu, signalling the tailend of the Edo period. Players will control the wandering warrior as they set out to carve their own path and write history, whether it be to support the rising shogunate, go against the new government, or join the invaders seeking to take Japan for themselves. Lead the ronin and travel Japan to grow his skills and fight against any enemies he faces, brandishing any weapon he can find, and mastering all fighting stances he can learn.

Rise of the Ronin Gameplay
Rise of the Ronin is a 3rd-person action adventure RPG where players will control the wandering ronin as he ventures throughout Japan, exploring settlements, fighting enemies, and acquiring weapons, and learning skills. Player choices will heavily affect the story, resulting in a wide variety of possible endings. One can choose to assassinate certain key historical figures, or help them in their plights. Any consequences will result in different branches of the story, leading to alternate timelines.
The ronin will have access to a variety of weapons, from melee to ranged. They can wield traditional katanas, naginatas, and even a bayonet for close combat. A bow and arrow can be utilized to fend off enemies from a distance, but firearms powered by gunpowder such as flintlock pistols can be acquired to decimate any enemy.

Rise of the Ronin’s reveal trailer was shown during the September 2022 PlayStation State of Play presentation. It featured a nameless ronin in 1863 Japan when the Black Ships arrived on the shores of Japan, fighting in various ways to eliminate his enemies.
