Mafia: The Old Country Overview

Mafia: The Old Country is an upcoming action-adventure game scheduled for release in summer of 2025 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Serving as a prequel to the first game in the series, it delves into the origins of organized crime in early 1900s Sicily. Here, players assume the role of Enzo Favara, a young man who escapes a life of indentured servitude in Sicily’s sulfur mines and ultimately joins the Torrisi crime family in the fictional town of San Celeste, previously featured in Mafia II.

The game is a third-person, linear, narrative-driven experience that aligns more closely with the cinematic storytelling of the first two Mafia titles, as opposed to the non-linear approach of Mafia III. As explained by Hangar 13 president Nick Baynes in an interview with IGN, while there will be an open world for players to explore in "a car, on foot, or on horseback," side missions are fairly limited.

Mafia: The Old Country Gameplay

Mafia: The Old Country emphasizes a linear, narrative-driven gameplay experience set in early 1900s Sicily. Departing from the open-world structure of Mafia III, it returns the series to the more focused progression of the first two installments. Players will navigate the game through the perspective of Enzo Favara, and can engage in third-person action sequences that incorporate both melee and ranged combat.

Given the time period, combat will make use of period-authentic weaponry, including early firearms, and fighting techniques such as Sicilian knife fighting. Moreover, while not an open-world title, vehicles, such as early automobiles and horse-drawn carriages, will be present and utilized within the context of missions and story progression.

The gameplay is designed to complement the narrative, with missions and scenarios tightly integrated into Enzo’s rise through the ranks of the Torrisi crime family.
