Death by Scrolling Overview
Death by Scrolling is a roguelike RPG set to release in on October 28, 2025 for PC, and at a later date for consoles. This is the latest game from acclaimed game developer Ron Gilbert, aka Grumpy Gamer, and his development studio Terrible Toybox (Return to Monkey Island, Thimbleweed Park).
The game sees players enter the depths of Purgatory, a bizarre, danger-filled middle ground between life and eternal death. Here, they must battle monsters, avoid the Grim Reaper, and collect enough money to pay the ferryman to usher them to safety.
Death is always approaching—literally. It’s a race to safety in this 2D action roguelike as the screen scrolls ever upward, not letting players catch their breaths or find safety. Wait for too long, and the endless abyss right under your screen will come and take over, and so will the Grim Reaper that lurks within.

Death by Scrolling Gameplay

Death by Scrolling is an action roguelike where players have to escape the afterlife by earning 10,000 gold, paying the ferryman for his services, and, most importantly, surviving. The straightforward objective is made difficult by the fact that the screen scrolls continuously towards the end, forcing players to power through encounters and face any and all danger head-on.
All sorts of monsters and demons stand in your way, sending everything they’ve got in bullet hell fashion. Not only that, but the environment itself may even pose the greatest danger, as an inconveniently placed set of rocks can prove to be a formidable obstacle.
Despite that, players aren’t powerless in the fight against death. Each run, they’ll be able to collect different weapons and buffs that strengthen the chances at escape. Not only that, but as a roguelike, players will be able to unlock permanent upgrades between attempts, with each failed escape contributing to the player's full skills and arsenal.
