Black Myth: Wukong Overview

Black Myth: Wukong is an action-adventure RPG developed by Game Science, released on August 19, 2024, for PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam and Epic Games. The game is a standalone title inspired by Wu Cheng’en’s Journey to the West, set in a fictionalized version of ancient China.

The story revisits key events in Sun Wukong’s journey as depicted in Journey to the West, including his quest for immortality, his conflict with the Jade Emperor, his banishment from the Celestial Palace, and his eventual return to power.

Black Myth: Wukong Gameplay

Image

Black Myth: Wukong combines fast-paced combat, exploration, and crafting mechanics. Players control Wukong, utilizing his iconic staff and versatile fighting techniques to engage enemies and face imposing bosses in dynamic battles.

The combat system is influenced by precision-focused mechanics similar to those in FromSoftware’s Dark Souls series, emphasizing parries, perfect dodges, and counterattacks. Wukong can transition between three distinct stances during combat, each supporting different strategies and featuring unique upgrade paths.

Black Myth: Wukong distinguishes itself by incorporating transformations and spells into its combat mechanics. Transformations enable Wukong to take the form of defeated enemies, introducing tactical variety, while spells offer powerful abilities with significant cooldowns. Players can also collect relics, which provide passive buffs and potent active abilities.

The game's exploration follows a more linear structure compared to open-world titles like Elden Ring, but it includes a detailed crafting system. Players can combine herbs and spices to create buffs, which become increasingly important in the challenging endgame.

Black Myth: Wukong Trivia

⚫︎ While Black Myth: Wukong draws its roots from the classic Journey to the West, its narrative aligns more closely with a modern reinterpretation of the tale, Tale of Wukong. This reimagined story reframes Tang Shanzang’s quest for enlightenment as part of a grand conspiracy orchestrated by the gods. This is paralleled by Black Myth: Wukong’s portrayal of gods in the game as scheming antagonists.

⚫︎ Select tourist destinations corresponding to real-world locations featured in Black Myth: Wukong offered free passes to players who managed to beat the game. These sites include Lingyan Temple, Mount Chaya, and the legendary Mount Huaguo—the setting for the game's tutorial section.

⚫︎ The lead creators of Black Myth: Wukong previously worked on an MMORPG inspired by the tale of Sun Wukong, called Asura. Although Asura is now defunct, the core team behind it eventually left Tencent to establish their own studio, where they later developed Black Myth: Wukong.
