Decadent Story Plot
Decadent thrusts players into the role of John Lorn, a former World War I soldier-turned-occultist. Once, while on a desperate journey through the Arctic following the fate of a missing Miskatonic University expedition, Lorn was plagued by a parasitic entity from one of his experiments gone awry. This, however, granted him supernatural abilities at the cost of his mental stability. He must now navigate both physical threats and his spiraling sanity if he ever wants to save his estranged son.
Decadent Gameplay
Decadent places players in a state where sanity is a fragile thing. As John Lorn, you must manage your resources wisely, as running out of ammo or facing overwhelming enemies can push your character toward madness.
The game’s signature feature is its Madness system, where your mental state is affected by stressful events and encounters with eldritch horrors. As your Madness increases, reality starts to distort. Early symptoms might be minor visual glitches, but as you spiral into full-blown insanity, your perception warps dramatically. Hallucinations blur the line between real and imagined threats, and basic actions like aiming or reloading become unreliable, creating a constant sense of unease.
Interestingly, embracing Madness can provide benefits as well. At moderate levels, it enhances your intuition, allowing you to detect enemies that are still out of sight—making it a double-edged sword. Fully succumbing to insanity, however, leads to more severe consequences, like seeing non-existent enemies and losing precise control over your movements. The deeper you dive into this mechanic, the more the world of Decadent becomes an unpredictable nightmare.
