Broken Roads, a story-driven RPG set in the post-apocalyptic lands of Western Australia, has the potential to be an endearing game. Read on about our first impressions of the game, its gameplay, and its story.
Broken Roads Review
Broken Roads First Impressions
Story-driven stories are always a treat. A strong narrative is often enough to pull players into a state of immersion and engagement that mere realistic visuals and audio could struggle to maintain. On the other hand, a cast of wonderfully crafted characters and a gripping story can single-handedly keep you glued to your gaming chairs, even if the gameplay lacks any redeeming features.
Broken Roads, which seeks to emulate the traditional role-playing game experience similar to what Disco Elysium has done, possesses all the makings of an excellent narrative experience. Although it will surely have difficulties making a cohesive storyline if it delivers on its promise of an expansive, choice-based plot, it’s still an exciting prospect to look forward to.
The Morality Compass is quite an interesting mechanic as well. Since it will also affect your character’s specialties outside of a mere indication of his tendencies and alignment, it will add another layer of customizability to a game that already promises near-unlimited combinations of specializations.
Everything We Know About Broken Roads
Broken Roads Story Plot
Broken Roads is a rich, narrative-driven RPG where your decisions shape the events that transpire around you. As such, your actions determine the story. It’s set on the lands of a post-apocalyptic Western Australia, filled with dangerous enemies and memorable encounters. You start as one of the four available characters, each with their own stories. It’s up to you, the player, to shape their adventure and lead your party safely through the wastelands.
Broken Roads Gameplay
Broken Roads employs many traditional gameplay mechanics that RPG players will feel at home tinkering with. These include character customization options, branching storylines, and turn-based combat.
Chief among these features is Broken Roads’ "Moral Compass." This is the game’s morality system that focuses on a character’s philosophy instead of a simple notion of good and evil. The Moral Compass is influenced by your decisions on the field and the dialogues you choose to interact with others.
Depending on your character’s morality, the Moral Compass endows you with the appropriate effects passively. For example, a Machiavellian character prefers to be feared than loved and is an excellent fighter. However, their soft skills, such as tinkering, suffer as a consequence.
