Hogwarts Legacy 2 Release Date Predictions
Not Anytime Soon, 2027 at the Earliest
Anyone have a Time Turner that moves us forward through time? Because that’s what we’re gonna need. Warner Bros. has confirmed that a sequel to the highly-successful game based on the worldwide wizarding phenomenon of Harry Potter is the main priority of their games division, and so fans everywhere will be thrilled to learn that they will venture into the magical school of Hogwarts once again! However, a big game like Hogwarts Legacy will no doubt need much time to be developed. As such, we might not even see the sequel anytime soon, with a release range of 2027-2028 the most likely scenario.
Hogwarts Legacy itself was said to have started development around 2018, was announced in 2020, and was finally released in 2023. Given that would be around five years worth of development time, we merely add 5 years after the original’s release in 2023 and we get an estimate of 2028.
However, we should consider other factors: Given that it’s a sequel, how much of the predecessor will be carried over, in terms of assets, mechanics, and content? The team at Avalanche Studios were able to handcraft the entirety of the Hogwarts Castle, Grounds, Hogsmead, and even other environments in the wizarding world. Seeing as tons of assets are already available, there won’t be much reason to remake much of them, and would most likely see minor touch-ups, revisions, or modifications to depict change/age between the games. This would drastically reduce much of the needed development time in terms of assets, and so they would be free to allocate their resources to working on other features and such, giving it a chance to potentially release earlier than 5 years around 2027.
But! It could also very well go in the other direction, and that Hogwarts will be remade almost from the ground up to instill that sense of ever-changing twisting corridors that the school is known for. However, that would be a massive waste of resources, and therefore won’t likely be the route to go forward.
The most likely thing to happen would be for Hogwarts to get some slight modifications, tweaks, and additions here and there to instill a sense of change and aging, but still maintain the familiarity for those who’ve spent hundreds of hours in the original game. Expand the castle and its grounds even further, adding more secrets and passageways and allowing a far wider degree of freedom to explore the countryside where it resides. Aside from Hogwarts, even more famous locations from the world of Harry Potter could be explored, such as Diagon Alley (or even Knockturn Alley), and perhaps even the Ministry of Magic? This would be a manageable target goal in terms of old and new content combined, placing the end of their development cycle a snug fit of 4-6 years similar to the original title.
