After the universal success of Baldur’s Gate 3, a sequel to the RPG has been all but confirmed! But when will it come out? Will we have to wait nearly a quarter of a century again? Who’ll develop it? Read our article to see our best guesses!
Baldur’s Gate 4 Release Date and Time
By 2030, if We’re Lucky
There’s no need to beat around the bush, Baldur’s Gate 3 is a behemoth with leagues upon leagues of content packed into a video game. To make a sequel to it, let alone try to satisfy the stratospheric expectations that it’ll receive, would be a monstrous undertaking for any game development studio. Thus, the right choice for a Baldur’s Gate 4 is for Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast, the owners of Dungeons and Dragons and by extension the Baldur’s Gate franchise, to take their time and carefully plan as to what a sequel to the 2023 Game of the Year could be.
Wizards of the Coast senior vice president of Digital Strategy and Licensing Eugene Evans states as such, that they’re taking their time to "find the right partner, the right approach, and the right product that could represent the future of Baldur’s Gate." Though they could easily try to take advantage of the overwhelmingly positive reception BG3 received, they are opting to not rush into its future, but instead slowly and carefully considering their options. Although they wish to tread carefully, Evans mentions that he hopes BG4 doesn’t reach the extended distance of release years between BG2 and BG3.
The gap between Baldur’s Gate 2 and Baldur’s Gate 3 is enormous, taking over a score for the sequel to arrive. However, the conditions of both releases are incomparable, as gaming development trends and practices have drastically changed since then, and thus we can’t infer anything from the 20 plus year gap. BG3’s conception started during the tailend of production of Larian Studios’ Divinity: Original Sin II in 2019. It was only a year later when BG3 was released onto a long and arduous early access state, where development continued for three years until its full release in 2023.
Seeing as it would be remiss for Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast to drastically divulge from the masterpiece of a formula BG3 concocted, they will most likely try to replicate and improve upon BG3. Given that, we could estimate BG4 to take around the same time of development, and perhaps more, settling onto a good range 4-6 years. Then, from Evan’s earlier statement of the company taking careful next steps for the franchise, we can allot another 2-3 years of allowance for their meticulous decision making.
That gives us around 6-9 years for a potential Baldur’s Gate 4. Now if only we knew who could make it…
Who Will Make Baldur’s Gate 4?
Larian Studios Have Decided to Move on From D&D Entirely
We don’t really have much information about which studio might take the helm and produce the next Baldur’s Gate, but we do have confirmation on who WON’T, and that’s Larian Studios themselves who made Baldur’s Gate 3. Studio founder Swen Vincke stated in a developer panel that they have no plans to provide any further expansions, DLC, and even the coveted sequel to BG3. The company has decided that the studio will entirely be moving on from D&D as a whole to give way for another developer studio to take charge of the next generation’s Baldur’s Gate.
Whoever will be chosen by Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast to make BG4 definitely has massive shoes to fill, as what Larian Studios has achieved with BG3 was seems insurmountable with the amount of accolades and achievements it has received.
