Everything We Learned
・You're on a Quest to Save Cereza's Mother
・Play as Cereza & Chesire Simultaneously
・Solve Puzzles in The Environment

During the Game Awards 2022, Nintendo and Platinum Games announced the release of the prequel game, Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon, which is scheduled to release on March 17th, 2023. The trailer highlights the game’s storybook aesthetic, features and gameplay.

Cereza is on a Quest to Save Her Mother

The game focuses on the young Cereza going into the forbidden Avalon Forest with her first demon, Cheshire, possessing Cereza’s stuffed toy to rescue her mother from the dark prison revealed during the game’s trailer. Bayonetta Origins will feature action-adventure gameplay and focus on exploration, unlike the usual hack-and-slash combat system in the Bayonetta Series.

Play as Cereza & Chesire Simultaneously

Players will be able to control both Cereza and Cheshire at the same time to overcome combat challenges and puzzles.

So how exactly does the gameplay work? Well, snippets from the announcement trailer show action-focused combat of Cereza binding the enemies with her magic in place while the demon Cheshire defeats them. Players will have to use the Left Joy-Con to move Cereza and the Right Joy-Con for Cheshire. Online Co-Op Multiplayer is not available in the game however, local multiplayer is available if you hand a friend one of the Joy-Cons.

Solve Puzzles in The Environment

The puzzles in Bayonetta Origins will require you to solve puzzles with a bit of teamwork between Cereza and Cheshire. You can either guide Cheshire in his demon form or return Cheshire into a stuffed cat toy which Cereza can then toss up to reach higher places. The stuffed cat toy can also be used by Cereza to help grab and pull her forward to other platforms.

Is Bayonetta Origins Worth Buying?

Recommended If You Don't Mind the Controls

Bayonetta Origins gameplay can be confusing as the singleplayer experience requires you to control two characters at once, but thankfully the action is toned down enough that controlling two characters doesn't seem like much of an issue.

If the controls aren't a deal breaker for you, you are in for a charming game with a pleasant art style, decent combat, and plenty of puzzles. Plus this entry will definitely expand on the lore of Bayonetta, so if you are interested in the storyline of the series, that is another strong selling point that might interest you.
