Everything We Know About Total War: PHARAOH

Total War: PHARAOH Factions and Units

image

With Total War: PHARAOH being set during the New Kingdom period of Ancient Egypt - before the Late Bronze Age Collapse, there are several ancient factions you can take control of and conquer the Sinai Peninsula, the Levant, and even Cyprus and Anatolia.

 ● Egyptians
 ● Canaanites
 ● Hittites

Each of these factions has its own sub-factions, which have different starting points, different units, and different tactics.

image

For example, the Egyptian sub-factions composed of Rameses, Seti, Tausret, and Amenmesse each have units that can be recruited faction-wide, as well as their own special units and buildings.

images

Ramesses has Medjay and Sherden troops that are low in number but fast and adept at flanking enemies. Seti uses expendable Levy troops, Tausret’s armies are backed by Chariot-riding warriors, and Amenmesse has access to powerful archer units from the Kushite, Nubian, and Ta-Ceti tribes of Kush.

The Hittites and Caananites have their own sub-factions as well.

For the Hittites, Suppiluliuma’s sub-faction upholds the power of the Great King himself, and they have access to heavy armor and spear chariots. Meanwhile, Kurunta’s sub-faction follows the man who believes himself to be the Stag God of Hittite lore, and at his service are armies of melee attackers like Hittite Chargers and Kaskian Warriors.

Meanwhile, the Caanites are divided between the diplomatic and secretive Bay, and the wild anarchist looter Irsu. Bay’s forces are composed of quick ambushers and militiamen who can catch their unsuspecting foes off-guard, while Irsu’s forces have forgone subtlety in exchange for sheer brutality on the battlefield.

Total War: PHARAOH Map

Though we haven’t seen any official versions of the entire campaign map, the official Total War YouTube channel has released a campaign map flyover video that shows us the general area where the game is set to take place.

We start at the lower end of the Nile, before going up to the Upper Nile, then the Sinai Peninsula, up the Levant, and then into Eastern Anatolia. Going by this, the game will most likely cover the modern countries of Egypt, Israel, Syria, and eastern Turkey, as well as Cyprus.

Though this may look smaller compared to past Total War games at first glance, the total count of provinces in the game may rival games such as Total War: Rome 2.

Total War: PHARAOH Gameplay

image

Total War: PHARAOH is essentially two games - a real-time strategy game where you control units on the battlefield, do daring maneuvers, and eventually route your enemies, and a turn-based grand strategy game where you manage your empire, build new buildings and move armies across territories.

image

You’ll also have to manage diplomacy between your faction and other factions on the map, crafting alliances and trade deals, getting military access into areas without going into war, and other matters of state. If these negotiations break down, however, then prepare your armies and have them march into your enemy's territories, take their cities, and either make them your vassals or wipe them off the map.
