The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, the third game in the action RPG series The Witcher, was released 9 years ago. Months after its release in 2015, developer CD Projekt launched 'Modkit,' a mod that enables players to alter several aspects of the game to their own liking, albeit without letting them create entirely new constructs.
Now, after nearly a decade, the studio has launched a beta of a "comprehensive modding tool" that will let players do just that, The Witcher 3 REDkit. This mod tool "is more than just a game development tool — it's a love letter to our community! With The Witcher 3 REDkit, you can share your ideas, and inspire others to create a unique gaming experience that is truly your own."
In line with the development, CD Projekt announced today that The Witcher 3 REDkit will undergo a playtesting phase until the end of April. "Playtest access will be distributed in batches. After receiving access 'The Witcher 3 REDkit Playtest' will appear in your Steam Library," read their announcement on Steam. "Remember that the editor will require The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt game files in order to work properly, so make sure you have it installed too!"
The Witcher 3 REDkit promises nearly limitless freedom in modding the game, allowing players to craft new quests, items, characters, animations, storylines, and even entire territories"— the only limit is your imagination." The studio revealed that it is based on the same set of tools used by the devs to create Witcher 3. While currently in beta, CD Projekt advised players that they might encounter issues during the playtest phase.
Interested individuals can request access to the playtest by visiting The Witcher 3 REDkit's Steam page and selecting the 'Request Access' button. Do note that this is available only on the PC. Moreover, REDkit is available free of charge for anyone who owns The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on PC and is set to be fully launched later this year.
