Assassin's Creed Shadows Extended Gameplay Reveal
Assassin's Creed Shadows combines the best elements of the series’ past entries with new, innovative features. The game promises a deep and engaging experience with its dual protagonists, each offering unique gameplay styles. Yasuke’s brutal, direct approach contrasts with Naoe’s stealthy and strategic methods, providing a nicely wrapped blend of combat mechanics seen in past AC titles.
Yasuke’s Playstyle and Combat Mechanics
In the demo, Yasuke arrives in a town oppressed by a corrupt shogunate. This setting provides a backdrop for Yasuke to act as a savior to the oppressed villagers. His commanding presence can be felt right from the get go. Yasuke’s combat style veers towards traditional melee combat, requiring players to dodge or counter enemy attacks, indicated by blue and red indicators on their blades.
The combat is brutal, featuring graphic finishing moves where Yasuke decapitates enemies or impales them before slamming them down. These finishers are accentuated with black-and-white frame cuts and blood splatter.
Yasuke also wields a spiked club for dealing with armored foes and a single-shot rifle for ranged attacks. Yasuke’s playstyle focuses on head-on confrontations rather than stealthy approaches. His combat blends classic swordsmanship with the raw power of a hulking, giant warrior.
Naoe’s Playstyle and Combat Mechanics
Following Yasuke’s introduction, a cutscene transitions to Naoe and Yasuke teaming up for an assassination assignment. Playing as Naoe, you will experience a different combat approach focused on stealth and agility. Naoe can scale walls, hide in foliage, and perform stealthy kills.
While she primarily uses the Hidden Blade, Naoe also has throwable kunai for ranged attacks and short swords for close-ranged combat. Her arsenal includes a chained blade that can be used for slicing through crowds of enemies and environmental objects. Case in point: Naoe’s arsenal enables her to become swift, calculating, and lethal.
Naoe’s gameplay channels more traditional AC mechanics, making smart use of tools and strategic planning. She can silently kill, distract, or displace guards to avoid detection. She also has the ability to crawl in a prone stance—a viable mechanic for making escapes, where you should remain undetected while finishing off the remaining foes in your immediate area.
