The Elder Scrolls 6 team assures fans that progress on the new game is going smoothly and that they’re committed to polishing the game up, even if it takes a while. Read on to find out the latest updates surrounding Bethesda’s long-awaited RPG.
Todd Howard Assures Elder Scrolls Fans
The Elder Scrolls 6 News—Finally!
The Elder Scrolls 6 (TES6) director Todd Howard offered a rare update on their progress, assuring fans that the game’s prolonged development is for polishing the game up further and making sure it meets fans’ expectations.
Howard told GameInformer that while he wished production on the game went by a little faster, he assured fans that a majority of Bethesda’s manpower is working on The Elder Scrolls 6. He also claimed that creating TES6 is a process that he "wants to get right," a sentiment shared by other members of the team. Studio Design Director Emil Pagliarulo pointed out that the team doesn’t feel the time pressure that players put on them because, in his words, "games take a long time, and games get pushed all the time."

He compared TES 6’s development cycle to a similarly long-awaited open world game, Grand Theft Auto 6, asserting that the delays to the game are the best thing Rockstar could’ve done for a game of its size. Pagliarulo noted that games of The Elder Scrolls’ scale "take not just a long time to make, but a long time to spit and polish and iron out the bugs."
The Elder Scrolls 6 has faced a particularly long development cycle, officially being announced at Bethesda’s E3 2018 showcase alongside Starfield. News surrounding the game has been sparse, having only entered early development in 2023 and finished early playable builds by 2024.
The Elder Scrolls 6 Will Showcase Advancements in Gaming Hardware

Despite TES6’s labored development cycle, the team at Bethesda seems confident about the progress being made for the game. Studio Director Angela Browder, in particular, has expressed a lot of excitement for the game so far because of how the development team has taken advantage of advancements in hardware and technology.
Browder, an avid fan of The Elder Scrolls series, noted that she’s "excited about what’s in front of us, because the opportunities, the hardware, the rendering, all of this stuff…is crazy," pointing out that she could have never envisioned the game’s current state in her days playing Skyrim. On that note, she also calls the game an "endless set of possibilities" that will showcase "how far everything has come in our industry."

The developers’ enthusiasm, at the very least, bodes well for the game moving forward, but it remains to be seen if Bethesda delivers on its promises. In the meantime, Bethesda has launched a Nintendo Switch 2 version of Skyrim, which features faster loading times, enhanced visuals, and Legend of Zelda inspired weapons.
The Elder Scrolls 6 is expected to release around 2026 for Steam and Xbox Series X|S. To keep up to date with Bethesda’s long-awaited RPG, check out our article here:
