Terraria Rolls Out Major Update
15 Years Since Launch, Still Going Strong
Terraria just released its 1.4.5 Bigger and Boulder update synchronously across all platforms and regions on January 27, with a delay for the Chinese mobile edition. First announced by Re-Logic in 2022 and initially scheduled for launch in 2023, the major update delivers a plethora of fresh content—continuing its crossovers with Palworld and Dead Cells, 650 new items, quality of life (QoL) polishing, and many more—15 years after the 2D platformer RPG originally released.
"Beyond a good bit of additional content, a lot of effort with this update went into rounding out and expanding on existing experiences," a Re-Logic administrator posted on their website. Nonetheless, they did not provide a full disclosure of the update's scope, and instead urged players to find out for themselves. "Part of the fun is in the discovery!" they added.
Content Galore with QoL, World Seeds, and New Additions

For QoL improvements, version 1.4.5 remodeled the crafting interface to accommodate Terraria's more than 6,000 items through searchable recipe categories. Moreover, expanded chest integration could now streamline gameplay by eliminating the need to transfer stored items into the player's inventory for crafting.
Moreover, the new Spectator feature will allow dead players to observe other players' actions rather than simply waiting for a respawn countdown.
Improvements to housing management are also part and parcel to the update. NPCs will no longer require a valid room to spawn, although they will retreat to safety at night if they do not have a home yet. In addition, NPCs now have their own character portraits.

The new World Seed Menu will make it easier to discover and enter special seeds. Various customizable effects and experiences are also available to the player through specific combinations of special seeds. Among them are permanently setting the Christmas season, turning the player character into a vampire, creating a world with larger and more dungeons, and several others.
Furthermore, one of the significant additions to the game is the Skyblock World Seed—a format similar to the well-known Skyblock challenge seed in Minecraft. The player will spawn on a small floating island, requiring them to navigate resource scarcity while avoiding falling to their demise.
Other features debuting in the update are the RC Car drone, new Summoner whips, additional block and furniture sets, backgrounds, environmental effects, and eight new boss tracks that will soon be added to the official soundtrack.
Crossovers with Palworld and Dead Cells

The 1.4.5 update will also fulfill Terraria's side of its crossovers with Palworld and Dead Cells. In a crossover project with Terraria in June 2025, Palworld released its Tides of Terraria update, featuring new equipment, a Moon Lord raid boss, and a new dungeon with enemies borrowed from Terraria's IP. Meanwhile, Terraria is bringing popular Pals from Palworld into the 1.4.5 update, reimagining them as utility companions. Two of them, Digtoise and Cattiva, assist in digging underground and gathering wood, respectively.
In 2022, Dead Cells added the Guide NPC and the Starfury sword from Terraria. This time around, Terraria is bringing Dead Cells to its universe by reenvisioning multiple of Dead Cells' vanity items, furniture, and weapons.
1.4.5 is not the first time Terraria has collaborated with other video games in its major updates. It has previously participated in reciprocal content with Minecraft, Stardew Valley, and Project Zomboid, among others.
Players Look Forward to Another 100% Game Completion

The Terraria community mostly responded to the news with good-natured humor. Some Reddit users lightheartedly complained that the update’s release clashed with their work priorities for the day. Other players noted having to complete the game at 100% once more, given the addition of more achievements on Steam. Meanwhile, mod users were encouraged to use a vanilla playthrough for now, as the mods had not yet caught up with the new update.
Aside from that, many are wondering where the cross-play feature is, with some also hoping for cross-saving in a future update. At the moment, Terraria does not support cross-platform multiplayer yet. In 2023, Re-Logic announced that cross-play would come a bit later, after the release of 1.4.5.

Terraria is a 2D platformer RPG, currently playable on almost all modern platforms, including PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo 3DS, mobile, and old-gen consoles (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation Vita, and Wii U).
