Terraria is offering a new refund policy if players manage to best its creator. Read on to learn more about the details of the refund and its effect on Terraria's player base.
Terraria's Creator Introduces Unique Refund Policy
Defeat Him in PvP for a Refund
In a surprising and whimsical move, Andrew Spinks, the creator of the immensely popular sandbox game Terraria, has unveiled an unconventional refund policy that has caught the gaming community's attention. On June 9, Spinks, who also serves as the CEO of Re-Logic, took to Twitter (X) to announce that players seeking a refund for Terraria, which retails at $9.99, can now do so with a unique twist: they must personally defeat him in player-vs-player (PvP) combat.
"I’m pleased to announce that Re-Logic has a new refund policy. You can now refund Terraria for any reason, no questions asked," Spinks tweeted. "You just have to personally defeat me in PvP." This daring challenge has added an intriguing and humorous element to the refund process, reflecting Spinks' playful engagement with the Terraria community.
The community response to Spinks' announcement has been overwhelmingly positive and amused. One Twitter (X) user asked, "Why on earth would I ever want to refund Terraria?" Spinks replied with "So you can buy Terraria again."
High Stakes Jousting
Popular Terraria YouTuber Chippy quickly took up the gauntlet, attempting to best Spinks in a 1vs1 joust. However, as seen in Chippy's video, defeating the game's creator proved to be an arduous task. Despite his extensive experience with Terraria, Chippy was soundly defeated by Spinks, illustrating just how difficult the refund challenge truly is.
In an even more dramatic twist, Spinks elevated the stakes of the PvP battle. "We are jousting, and whoever wins the joust becomes the new CEO of Re-Logic," he declared at the beginning of the fight. Naturally, Spinks emerged victorious, retaining his CEO position. While there was no mention of any penalty for Chippy's loss, it showcased the light-hearted and competitive spirit Spinks brings to his interactions with the community.
A Tradition of Challenges
Ted Murphy, Re-Logic's head of business, shared with PC Gamer that such challenges have become a tradition during testing sessions. "They have had joust-offs, challenges using only certain weapons, and the like. Chippy has never dethroned the king," Murphy explained. This tradition highlights the camaraderie and ongoing engagement between Spinks and the community.
Murphy also revealed that Spinks' tweets were inspired by a recent review of Terraria's refund requests and Steam reviews. The Re-Logic team often reads these reviews to identify gameplay issues, bugs, and areas for improvement. However, many negative reviews are perceived as humorous rants, with some players leaving complaints after hundreds of hours of gameplay. The refund challenge tweet emerged as a humorous response to these often outlandish reviews.
Despite the new refund policy, the game has continued to inspire creativity within its community so it's hard to imagine many players wanting to return Terraria. Since its release, the game has consistently received updates and maintained a devoted player base. In 2022, Spinks had suggested that the next big update would be the last, but the development continued, with 2023 being declared "the year of Terraria crossplay."
