Producer and host of Summer Game Fest, Geoff Keighley, has revealed that this year's SGF event will primarily focus on previously announced games and titles set for release in 2024, dispelling speculations on highly rumored reveals.
Geoff Keighley Sets Fans Expectations for Upcoming Summer Game Fest
Clarifies That Event Will Focus on Existing Games That Have New Updates
During a recent Q&A session on Twitch, Geoff Keighley, the producer and host of Summer Game Fest, revealed the 2024 event's agenda, confirming that updates will more or less only come from announced games by both big franchises and independent studios.
The Summer Game Fest is scheduled to kick off on June 7 at 2pm PT / 5pm ET / 10pm GMT and will run for approximately two hours. Keighley clarified that while there will be new announcements, the focus will predominantly be on giving fans updates and new insights into existing titles and those that have been announced to launch within the year.
"We really tried to program some unexpected things, from smaller teams and independent studios, into the show as well, alongside some big blockbuster games and franchises," Keighley explained during the stream. "I think it’s going to be, generally, a little bit quieter this summer in terms of crazy new announcements and shocking surprises and things like that."
Keighley advised fans to temper their expectations, adding, "There will definitely be new announcements, but the show is largely focused on, I think, existing games that have new updates for fans, just in terms of level setting."
No KH4, Wolf Among Us 2, or Metal Gear at Summer Game Fest 2024
While Keighley said that fans may anticipate updates on titles like Palworld, Metaphor: ReFantazio, and Monster Hunter Wilds, Keighley dispelled speculation about certain anticipated reveals. Notably, and sadly, there won't be a new GTA6 trailer, and announcements regarding Kingdom Hearts 4, The Wolf Among Us 2, or Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater should not be expected at this year's event.
Additionally, Keighley explained that unlike The Game Awards, which often features major surprises and new reveals, the Summer Game Fest will be geared towards providing updates on projects that are closer to release. They will largely focus on titles slated for release later this year, rather than long-term teasers or announcements for distant, or otherwise potential, future projects.
"There definitely are things that are being announced but this is not a show that has a lot of like 'coming in 2026' or '2027', or teasers for games that are years and years out... That's generally what I would say in terms of expectation setting," he clarified.
As for the number of games featured in the showcase, Keighley said that it's difficult to provide an exact count, but fans can anticipate a broad range of titles across different genres. He explained, "There’s a lot of games. In this show there are kind of shorter moments on a bunch of games, there’s not like one game we show for 15 minutes or something like that. It’s really a sampling of a bunch of different games across the industry, so that probably means more games as opposed to fewer, but it’s a really eclectic mix of games across the whole industry."
