Capcom recently updated Monster Hunter Rise with the latest DRM patch and it’s causing issues, breaking its Steam Deck compatibility. Read on to learn more about it.
Capcom Updates Monster Hunter Rise
Capcom Adds Enigma DRM to Monster Hunter Rise, Making it Incompatible on the Steam Deck
Monster Hunter Rise, the latest iteration in the series, recently got an update that changed its existing Denuvo DRM to the new Enigma Protector DRM. This has started causing issues in running the game in the Steam Deck, and has made the game unplayable on the platform.
Capcom Remains Adamant Against Mods
With the recent stance Capcom has taken against mods, they have decided to update their older games with the Enigma Protector DRM in an attempt to shut mods down. This backfired however, as older games like Resident Evil Revelations, Devil May Cry 3, and the like, were documented to be having performance and launch issues after the DRM update.
Capcom Remains As Their Own Worst Enemy
To no one’s surprise, players are taking up pitchforks, taking to Twitter (X) and Steam to complain about the recent update. Monster Hunter Rise is currently being review-bombed on Steam, where 60% of the recent reviews are negative mainly because of the added DRM. In one of the negative reviews, Steam user Cinereously Yours said:
"They added DRM that makes the game literally unplayable. It's MH World all over again, only this time worse.
Guess I've learned my lesson and won't play Capcom games again, that's a bummer."
It’s poetic how he points out that "It’s MHWorld all over again" as the players are poking fun at Capcom being their own enemy when it comes to updating their games. They’re comparing the incident to MH World’s Alatreon Title Update back in July 2020, which added a controversial DPS check in the fight which led to the game getting review bombed.
Capcom Apologizes For the Inconvenience
Capcom has sent out a blog post pertaining to the recent issues in their patch notes, saying:
"There have been reports of the game not running on Steam Deck after updating to Ver.16.0.2.0.
The dev team is currently investigating this issue.
We will let you know as soon as we find out more, so please hold on for further information.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause."
As much as I want to applaud Capcom for being fearless against the modding community, they might want to ease off on their crusade. At this point, it’s doing more harm than good on their part and it looks like it might hurt them in the long run with their upcoming updates and big games.
