Splitgate developers, 1047 Games, returns with a sequel to their 2019 multiplayer FPS. Read on to learn more about what awaits you in the Sol Splitgate League.

Splitgate 2 Launches in 2025

Familiar yet Fresh

On July 18, 1047 Games dropped a cinematic announcement trailer for Splitgate 2, the highly anticipated sequel to the free-to-play shooter that took the world by storm when it launched in 2019.

According to CEO Ian Proulx, their main goal was to "build a game that can last a decade or more." While the first game was inspired by classic arena shooters, the developers realized that "to make a modern game that lasts, we had to develop the tools for a deep and satisfying gameplay loop."

In line with this, Hilary Goldstein, Head of Marketing at 1047 Games, said "we rethought our approach to portals, hoping to ensure true Portal Gods could excel, but that no one had to constantly portal to taste victory."

The developers remained mum about Splitgate 2’s gameplay, but they did confirm that the game is made in Unreal Engine 5, free-to-play, and features a "faction system." While familiar elements remain, "Splitgate 2 should look and feel completely fresh from the original."

Splitgate 2 is confirmed to be coming on 2025 to PC, PS5|PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One.

Often dubbed as "Halo meets Portal", Splitgate is an arena PvP first-person shooter where players can shoot wormholes between two points to get around the map.

The original grew in popularity after the studio’s founders, Ian Proulx and Nicholas Bagamian, released a demo for users to test, amassing about 600,000 downloads in just a month. In fact, the game was so massive in its first few years that servers had to go offline to have their capacities increased.

Splitgate was in early access for a few years before officially releasing on September 15, 2022, when the studio announced that it would cease updating it to "build the game fans deserve." They teased back then that it would be "a new game in the Splitgate universe which will present revolutionary, not evolutionary, changes to our game."

New Characters, Maps, Factions

The trailer showed the Sol Splitgate League and introduces three distinct factions that "add more depth to the gameplay experience."

According to the game’s Steam page, the three factions offer unique playstyles. Joining Aeros allows you to "dash around the battlefield". You could also choose to "control the chaos as the tactical and time-manipulating Meridian". If all else fails, just "run in guns blazing with Sabrask’s raw power."

Little is known about how these factions will shake things up, but it is confirmed that "Splitgate 2 is not a hero shooter" akin to Overwatch or Valorant.

Those wanting to see gameplay would have to wait for Gamescom 2024 on August 21 to 25, but the trailer alone left fans craving for more.

Most gameplay details are behind closed doors at the moment, but the developers did make sure that the trailer was "an amazing representation of what you'll experience in Splitgate 2." They added, "yes, those are real maps. Yes, those are real Splitgate 2 weapons. Yes, that is a trail following you out of a portal. And yes, I’m telling you, in the house of Halo, that dual wielding was always awesome, so we brought it back."

Splitgate 2 Comics

The developers confirmed that Splitgate 2 will not have a single-player campaign. For those who want to dive deep into the game's lore, however, you can download the mobile companion app to read comics, earn character cards, and more. You can even take a quiz to learn which faction suits you best.
