Executive Producer Reveals the Inspiration Behind Sonic 3
The Sonic Franchise
Sonic 3 executive producer, Toby Ascher, shared that the upcoming Sonic 3 movie draws significant inspiration from the iconic game, Sonic Adventure 2. In an interview with GamesRadar+, Ascher expressed his excitement about Sonic 3, describing it as "probably the most exciting thing that we’ve done in the franchise." He elaborated further, hinting at a cinematic experience that pays homage to classic games the core of the Sonic Team grew up loving.
Since Shadow is one of the main villains in the game and his casting in the movie recently being unveiled as Keanu Reeves, it became evident that Sonic 3 will draw inspiration from Sonic Adventure 2, now we have definitive confirmation.
Ascher has shared before, in an interview with Paste Magazine, that "the Sonic franchise on the movie side is going to be these Avengers-level events.". With the release of Knuckles’ six-episode series this Friday, April 26, and the Sonic 3 movie on December 20, the Sonic media franchise seeks to continue elevating to new heights, building upon the foundations laid by its predecessors with thrilling new developments.
Sonic Adventure 2 Storyline

In the plotline of Sonic Adventure 2, Dr. Eggman uncovers a potent weapon from his grandfather's records, leading him to Shadow, an enigmatic black hedgehog. Shadow, fueled by a vow to honor his deceased friend Maria, allies with Eggman to seize control of the world using the ARK, a dormant space colony.
Meanwhile, Sonic is wrongfully detained by GUN after being mistaken for Shadow, while Knuckles thwarts Eggman and Rouge's attempt to steal the Master Emerald. As tensions escalate, Sonic and his allies race against time to stop Eggman's plan, culminating in a showdown on the ARK. In a climactic battle, Sonic and Shadow unite to save Earth, but at the cost of Shadow's life, fulfilling his promise to Maria and bringing closure to their tumultuous journey.
