Skull and Bones Might Be Doing Worse Than Suicide Squad

Sad News for the So-Called Quadruple A Game

Skull and Bones might be taking a home few accolades after all, just not the ones it was aiming for. Evidence of the pirate ship simulator’s continually declining performance was collated by Forbes, suggesting that Ubisoft’s so-called AAAA game might be performing worse than its fellow live-service flop, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

While both games rose to PlayStation’s Top 10 Most Played Games list on release, Skull and Bones quickly sank out of the bottom when players caught tailwind of its subpar quality. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League eventually fell off the list as well, but wasn’t kicked off so suddenly despite its shortcomings.

More to that point, PlayStation’s February 2024 Top Downloads list had Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League in its number 3 spot for the US and Canada, bested only by Helldivers 2 and FFVII Rebirth. Skull and Bones did even worse than GTA V—a decade-old game—debuting at #8 for the same territories and #7 for the EU.

Things aren’t going much better on Xbox, as Skull and Bones seems to be dredging the sea floor with a meager 47th place on the platform’s Most Played Games rankings. It’s possible that Skull and Bones might overtake Suicide Squad’s player count on Steam due to the latter’s poor performance on PC, but without Xbox’s official numbers, we can’t say for sure.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown Teases Upcoming Updates

On the other side of Ubisoft's spectrum of market success is Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, which will be receiving three free updates and a story DLC in the coming months, as revealed on the game’s official Twitter (X) page.

The first of the three updates is called “A Warrior’s Path”, and will become available sometime this month. This update promises a speedrun mode, a permadeath mode, and a whole slew of new outfits for Sargon.

The next update is slated for a Spring 2024 release and is called the “Boss Attack” update. As the name suggests, this update will focus on the game’s upcoming boss rush mode, and will also include even more outfits for the titular prince.

The last of these updates will be available sometime in Summer 2024 and will feature a whole host of combat, platform, and puzzle challenges. This update will also include new amulets, outfits, and more for the “Divine Trials”. The yet untitled story DLC will not be free and should be available sometime in late 2024.

This overwhelming support for Ubisoft's other major 2024 title is in stark contrast to the lukewarm reception that Skull and Bones received upon its release. While many were quick to notice the quality of Prince of Persia, many more were equally swift to realize how subpar Skull and Bones truly was despite Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot calling it a AAAA game.

People have been hyping up Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown's release ever since it was revealed that the game was being worked on by the people who made Rayman Legends. Many found their expectations met when the game's side-on perspective and genuinely fun platforming delivered on thr franchise's iconic vibe.

Skull and Bones, on the other hand, has been recieving skepticism ever since news of its live-service nature became apparent, fanned only slightly by Guillemot's prior claim. On release, people called it a "Pirate Ship Simulator" because of its reductive and repetitive gameplay, with many redditors noting that this game died within a month.
