Resident Evil Survival Unit Releases By The End of 2025
Pandemic Horror Strategy Game
Resident Evil Survival Unit is the first upcoming mobile strategy game in the Resident Evil franchise in collaboration with Aniplex and JOYCITY, led by former Square Enix Producer and now RE Survival Unit Executive Producer Shinji Hashimoto. During the game’s official announcement livestream on July 10, Hashimoto shared his insights on his latest project and its mechanics.
Hashimoto said that he liked the concept of "pandemic horror" and its survival elements, making the game align well with the strategy genre. He stated, "Because of that, we chose the strategy genre that allows players worldwide to enjoy the world of Resident Evil with others and a different perspective to the other games (previous titles)."

While RE Survival Unit inherits the long-running legacy of the RE series, it will present "a parallel storyline distinct from the original titles." RE Producer Masachika Kawata explained RE’s 30-year history full of gripping horror and exhilarating action, and is very excited about the series’ first full-fledged strategy game.
He also mentioned that the team was cautious in their approach to the project since it is the first time the series will be perceived in this genre. Moreover, Kawata said that it was a dream come true for fans to see different characters and creatures across the franchise make their appearance.
Set in a Parallel World Aligned with Resident Evil 2 and 3

The story of RE Survival Unit is set in a parallel world that aligns with Resident Evil 2 and 3. JOYCITY Producer Kyle Dongkyun stated that although this is the case, the core elements of the original series and characters have been faithfully carried over.
The main protagonist awakens in a hospital where they are held captive by the Umbrella Corp. for experimentation. Players try to escape the abandoned asylum and uncover its dark truth and mysteries, and face formidable enemies that require deep strategies to conquer. The game also includes easter eggs, items, and puzzle elements that the series is known for.
The Mansion Holds Everything

Acting as the main hub of the game, the Mansion is the base of operations that holds in-game activities and core elements of the playthrough. It houses various characters from the Resident Evil franchise, offering unique interactions and dialogue for fans to experience.
In here, players can prepare for missions, devise their strategies, and purchase various items from the iconic Weapons Merchant. "Built to reflect your decisions, this game gives you the freedom to create your own unique, tactical path!," Dongkyun said.
As mentioned, character from across the Resident Evil series will be featured, including fan-favorites like Leon S. Kennedy, Claire Redfield, and Jill Valentine. Using them, players can assemble their dream RE team and take on the horrifying creatures of this world. Each of these characters offer unique skills and traits, giving players more chance to explore diverse team compositions.
Featuring Original Creature Design by Yoshitaka Amano

The game also features an original creation by world-renowned Japanese Artist Yoshitaka Amano, who is known for his works with Final Fantasy, Vampire Hunter D, several classic anime titles, and much more. Amano brings his distinct and ethereal style that is fitting to the horrors of the Resident Evil series.
For RE Survival Unit, Amano created "Mortem", an important creature that is pivotal to the story. He stated, "When creating a character, there are always decisions you must make to shape its form. But in this case, I felt it would be even scarier if some aspects were left unknown. I wanted to create a sense of unease— a shadow-like presence that hints at what the creature really is, without fully revealing it."
All of the creatures designed are in collaboration between the three companies. Hashimoto emphasized that all studios have joined together in this project to create a game that preserves the original essence of Resident Evil, but puts it in a whole new perspective using the mobile gaming platform.
