Pokemon Battle Scope Unveiled by The Pokemon Company
Designed to Make Competitive Streams More Engaging
The Pokemon Company just announced a recent joint venture with Japanese AI developer HEROZ to create what they described to be an AI “specialized in Pokémon battles.” Pokemon Battle Scope (PBS) is an AI program designed to analyze, interpret, and predict Pokemon moves during a tournament. It was developed from a previous AI also made by HEROZ that specialized in Shogi — a strategy board game similar to chess that’s way more popular in Japan.
PBS is capable of providing a form of live commentary to the rapid-fire Pokemon Battles we often see streamed online. Pictured above is a screenshot of PBS in action, providing a live feed of each player’s probability of winning, a list of possible moves for their next turn, and the chance of success of each respective move succeeding. PBS makes these analyses and predictions by handling complex information related to Pokémon battles, such as Pokémon types and attributes, moves, items, weather conditions, and fields.
PBS was likely developed to increase viewer engagement. As fun as it was for the competition’s participants to duke it out live, the rapid-fire nature of their plays often leaves viewers who just tuned in to the match in the dust. In the press release showcasing PBS, The Pokemon Company stated that “PBS will allow viewers to understand what’s going on in a battle even if they are less knowledgeable about the game’s mechanics or if they join the stream mid-battle or similar.”
PBS at The Pokemon Dragon King Championships
Pokemon Battle Scope will be making its debut during The 2024 Pokemon Dragon King Cup Championships, which is a Japan-exclusive Pokemon Scarlet & Violet competition that will be held on February 25, 2024, in Tokyo, Japan. The whole event will be streamed live on YouTube, so make sure to catch PBS in action.
