Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Red Rescue Team Gets Added to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack

Available on August 9

Nintendo will soon be adding another beloved Pokémon game to the Switch's Expansion Pack classic games catalog. Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team is coming to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service on August 9, as announced by Nintendo today. This classic Pokémon spin-off title will be available through the Expansion Pack plan, which includes access to a select library of Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, and Sega Genesis games.

Released worldwide for the Game Boy Advance in 2006, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team is a spin-off roguelike game that lets players take on the role of a human who has mysteriously turned into a Pokémon. Players explore dungeons and go on various missions to unravel the mystery of their transformation. The game was released alongside a Blue Rescue Team version for the Nintendo DS and was remade for the Switch in 2020 as Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX.

Pokémon Fans Want Mainline Games on NSO Expansion Pack

While the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack catalog frequently gets refreshed with classic games, Nintendo has so far included only Pokémon spin-off games such as Pokémon Snap and Pokémon Puzzle League, which some fans have found disappointing. Pokémon fans have clamored for mainline Pokémon games to be available on the expansion pack catalog as well. Although Nintendo has shown no signs yet of putting mainline games, like Pokémon Red and Blue, on the expansion pack, fans have suggested possible reasons.

Some speculated the company is working out problems with N64 Transfer Pak interoperability, while others suggested issues with NSO's infrastructure, and the Swich's Pokémon Home app integration as probable causes. As Nintendo does not wholly own the app, certain agreements between the companies' partnership may pose challenges with its integration to the Switch. "I'd guess they want to ensure there's trading and that the trading can't be exploited," one fan suggested.
