Sony Patent Allows Specific Replays
Replayable Moments
Earlier this month, Sony filed a continued patent on a feature that may allow players to choose and play specific moments in games. A Sony document in WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) states a patent continuation on storing and accessing one or more stored "trigger points" in games."Trigger Points" are explained to be similar to chapters and sub-chapters that can be accessed anytime, and will allow the player to replay these points freely. Another key point is, they seek to integrate this feature alongside video streaming, allowing you to play on a whim while streaming movies or videos. This would be an interesting feature as streaming media has already been already one of the uses of the PlayStation 5.
Replaying chapters is nothing new, as this has always been a common feature for narrative-driven titles. However, some games have taken it a step further such as Detroit: Become Human where it makes the ability to branch out paths easier by choosing specific decision points throughout the game. Naughty Dog also used it for both Uncharted 4 and The Last of Us 2, as they have the "Encounter Menu" to replay specific fights in the different chapters.
Certain Practicalities
Another application would be having public save states for players to access and being able to replay. This application would help content creators with recording specific parts of the game such as walkthroughs for certain areas, guides for bosses, and the like. An example would be the recent Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, where getting to a certain point in the story would require you to replay the full game. Games like Final Fantasy XVI would be a great use for this feature, as long narrative games have great moments woven into the game. Though, it may still be tiring to some players like me, to sit through hours just to go back to a specific moment without a specific save for it.
