Monster Hunter Wilds, the next entry in the widely-beloved Monster Hunter franchise, is shaping up to become the series’ most detailed and hardware extensive title. In an interview from the recently concluded Summer Game Fest 2024, Monster Hunter Wilds director Yuya Tokuda spoke about how he approaches any Monster Hunter game he’s directing, citing his history with Monster Hunter Games before working at Capcom, and what aspects of the game he puts the most emphasis on, and his mission to fully squeeze out every bit of performance out of the current modern hardware to depict fully convincing ecosystems in Monster Hunter.

He shared that, since starting as a fan of the series before getting the chance to work on them, he was always enamored with the games’ ecosystems, where monsters seem to interact with each other and the environment to a convincing degree that made the worlds all the more realistic.

"My background with the series is I hadn’t yet joined Capcom when the first Monster Hunter came out. I was so bowled over when I saw the trailers for that game: I was impressed with how it was already, from the very first title, trying to depict a convincing ecosystem where the monsters were part of a world and it wasn’t just bosses on a game stage, so to speak."

From his passion for the highly acclaimed franchise, he then found himself working in Capcom where he served as a game designer on several Monster Hunter games, catching his big break as lead game designer on Monster Hunter 4: Ultimate, and finally on Monster Hunter World, where he was promoted to the title of Director. Taking his enthusiasm as a fan of the series from the start and alongside his experience with working on the franchise, he’s now directing the newest upcoming entry of Monster Hunter Wilds with the intention to implement every single aspiration and lesson he has for the game.

He spoke of how he’s always had a vision for the Monster Hunter games, and that with the next challenge in Wilds, he seeks to utilize all the power modern specs and hardware to enact his vision–to create wonderful flourishing ecosystems in the environments where players, monsters, and the world all seamlessly interact with one other.

"To be honest, it was always clear in my mind that was the direction I wanted to take it. Any Monster Hunter game where I’m director is always going to be focusing on the ecosystem element. As the hardware generations we’re working on get more and more powerful, I want to use the specs of the hardware to the max in order to depict as convincing a living, breathing world as I possibly can."
