Archetype Entertainment, a studio founded by former BioWare veterans, shared new details on its upcoming narrative-driven sci-fi action RPG, Exodus. Read on to know more.
Archetype Entertainment Unveils New Details on Exodus
Exodus was announced at The Game Awards in December 2023 and is part of its mother company's broader move in the video game industry. The upcoming sci-fi RPG's developers shared additional insights through a series of Q&A videos on YouTube.
Exodus Will Feature Non-Linearity and Multiple Endings
"You're going to be able to make momentous decisions, and you're gonna be able to see the results of those decisions over the course of years, decades, and even centuries," said James Ohlen, Co-Founder and Executive Creative Director of the studio. The game is "definitely not linear," with choices made in the game confirmed to create a butterfly effect that will impact the fate of the world and will open up opportunities to "explore a new universe."
The game will allow players to make decisions with far-reaching consequences that will unfold "over years, decades, and even centuries," and to explore the game world freely, according to Ohlen.
Exodus Devs Take Inspiration from Multiple IPs and Will Explore Time Dilation in Game
Ohlen noted that they took inspiration from their past works (Baldur's Gate, Dragon Age, Star Wars KOTOR, and the likes), and are collaborating with top science fiction authors, directors, and concept artists in the world. They’ll reveal more on who those people are within January this year. Likewise, Archetype Entertainment drew inspiration from RPGs known for their choice and consequence mechanics, citing titles such as Horizon, The Last of Us, and Tomb Raider.
Inspiration was also drawn from acclaimed movies such as Interstellar and Dune. Time dilation* is a concept that will be heavily explored in the game, according to Ohlen. In the game, time dilation might be used to explore the consequences of decisions made by players over extended periods.
* Time dilation is a concept that suggests time passes at different rates - relatively slower or faster - depending on the observer. Time would have moved 89 years further for one observer, whereas time would have moved relatively slower than 89 years (like, 3 months for example) for one other observer.
Humans "Are at the Very Bottom of the Food Chain" in Exodus
Exodus is set in the Omega Centauri cluster described as an "ancient and unusual" galaxy within the Milky Way. Humanity, having fled a dying Earth, faces a dire situation where "humans are at the very bottom of the food chain," said Ohlen. Players take on the role of The Traveler, humanity's last hope, and fight for survival.
Matthew McConaughey's In-Game Character Will Serve as a Mentor to Players
Archetype Entertainment revealed that Matthew McConaughey's in-game character will serve as a mentor to the player. The movie star's character is expected to offer players insights into their choices and potentially influence their decisions.
