Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Performance Tested Across All Platforms

Photo-Realistic Look With CryEngine

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2’s (KCD2) performance on different platforms is looking good, according to several tests and reports from several outlets. PlayStation and Xbox consoles ran the game smoothly at both 30fps and 60fps options, while KCD2 looks to take advantage of PS5 Pro’s capabilities in rendering the game world with additional improvements in graphics. KCD2’s photo-realistic rendering makes it unique, especially since few games use CryTek’s CryEngine.

KCD2 continues to use CryEngine, following its first game, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 1 (KCD1), which uses the same engine. Developer Warhorse Studios reportedly stuck with CryEngine as the team is familiar with the game engine, allowing them to explore and enhance features for the sequel.

According to PC Gamer, CryEngine’s main difference compared to other engines like Unreal Engine is that it utilizes old-school rendering. This means limited shaders and more basic lighting, but a major focus on performance.

Even with the old-school rendering, KCD2 can produce photo-realistic imagery in part because the game uses physically based materials. Eurogamer notes that CryEngine’s sparse voxel octree global illumination (SVOGI) creates a convincing indirect light bounce, making lighting around torches, light reflections on metals, and other objects react convincingly to the lighting.

PlayStation And Xbox Consoles Have 30 FPS and 60 FPS Options

Image

PS5 and Xbox Series X will have two modes available: a fidelity mode which runs 30fps at 1440p, and a performance mode which runs 60fps at 1080p. For the Xbox Series S, the game only runs in fidelity mode, with no performance mode available. On the opposite end, the PS5 Pro will also only have one option, running at a default of 60fps at 1296p with PSSR upscaling to 4K.

Fidelity mode will give the PS5 and Xbox Series X a boost in rendering, adding more foliage and better shadow cast across all terrain compared to the game's performance mode. This should make outdoor scenes look visually better and improve the quality of ambient occlusion. The PS5 Pro, however, will take KCD2’s visuals to a whole other level, as it improves upon all the fidelity mode features, adding more details to the game such as sharper imagery, better ambient occlusion and object quality, and overall image quality.

Upscaling Is Completely Optional For PC

As is tradition for PC versions, upscaling for KCD2 is completely optional as the game offers different ways to create the most suitable settings for the players’ PC. PC Gamer said that there aren’t many options for upscaling anyway, just FSR and DLSS to render the game from a lower resolution. There will be no XeSS for Intel cards, no sharpening options, and no frame generation for additional graphical improvements.

Despite the game being developed on the more performance-focused CryEngine, playing KCD2 will still be heavy for GPUs, especially for those looking to run the game at 4K, maximum settings. However, the game’s graphics are highly scalable, offering players five different quality presets to find the perfect settings for their PC: low, medium, high, ultra, and experimental.

KCD2 released an in-depth guide on how players can get their systems ready for the game. The guide features how players can check their specs, a detailed explanation of the requirements for CPU, RAM, GPU, and Storage, and other things players must be aware of before playing the game.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is set to release on February 4, 2025 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Check out our Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 page for more information about the game.
