Netflix Pulls Out Of Horizon Zero Dawn Series
Reports Of Toxic Behavior By Showrunner Have Surfaced
Horizon Zero Dawn’s series adaptation may be put on hold for a longer time now, as Rolling Stone reported last week that the show’s showrunner Steve Blackman (The Umbrella Academy, Bones) is accused of "toxic, bullying, manipulative, and retaliatory behavior." Twelve of his staffers and a formal HR complaint detailed his misdoings, such as firing a female writer simply for being pregnant, pitting staff against one another, taking credit for work that wasn’t his, and alleged lewd sexist, homophobic, and transphobic remarks.
In light of the news, Rolling Stone journalist Cheyenne Roundtree, who is also the writer for the aforementioned article on Blackman’s allegations, posted on her X (Twitter) that his projects at Netflix will no longer move forward. However, it is currently unclear whether or not the Horizon show will continue with a different creative partner, or will be definitively canceled.
Netflix has yet to officially announce anything regarding the Horizon show or on Blackman himself. The multimedia giant has declined to comment when approached by Rolling Stone.
Sony has also yet to comment on the news. The company first announced the series back in 2022, in a bid to expand their franchises’ reach into media and adaptations. The Last of Us was a hit on HBO and is now shooting its second season, while Ghost of Tsushima, God of War, a Twisted Metal TV show, and a Gran Turismo movie are in development.
