The rumored new Halo battle royale game was reportedly canceled recently. Read here to learn more about why the game was allegedly canceled.
New Halo Game Cancelled
The Game Was in Development Since 2020
The hosts and founders of the XboxEra podcast, Nick Baller and Jon Clarke, stated during the show that they heard rumors that the game had allegedly been canceled after both hosts seemingly got notified from different sources. "I didn’t hear shelved. I heard canceled. Shelved can mean you put it in the backburner to get back to it." says Baller. Furthermore, they brought up another acquaintance who also appears to have received the news of the rumored cancellation.
Despite never receiving an official announcement and being only alluded to, the game, titled Project Tanaka, was supposedly a Battle Royale mode in Halo Infinite in partnership with Certain Affinity. Having collaborated with the franchise since Halo 2, the developers have actively contributed to various multiplayer modes and maps in the past, such as creating the Defiant Map Pack in Halo: Reach.
During a 2022 interview with VentureBeat, Certain Affinity's President and Chief Operating Officer, Paul Sams, revealed that the studio's undisclosed project had been under development for over two years. Described as "something big and new for the franchise," Paul states that there were almost 100 staff members involved in the project.
The biggest thing we're doing that's public right now, for more than two years now we've been working on Halo Infinite doing something that - they're very prescriptive about what we can say,
says Sam during his interview with VentureBeat in 2022.
It remains unsure if the rumors are true as there has yet to be an official announcement by Certain Affinity, 343 Industries, or Microsoft on this project. Stay tuned for an update on this.
