Hironobu Sakaguchi, the legendary creator of Final Fantasy, has recently shared in an interview that he has no interest in returning to work on the Square Enix smash hit series.
Square Enix Legend Hironobu Sakaguchi Won't Work on FF Games Again
Neither on Mistwalker's Older Franchises Like Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon
In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Hironobu Sakaguchi, the legendary creator of Square Enix's highly acclaimed hit fantasy franchise, Final Fantasy, said that he isn't interested in revisiting the series or any of his old game franchises "If I take on the Final Fantasy brand again, I don’t know if I’ll be able to genuinely enjoy Final Fantasy XIV as much," he explained.
Final Fantasy XIV had just recently released its fifth expansion, Dawntrail, and introduced "new adventures, unexpected surprises, and gigantic discoveries." Check out more about Dawntrail and our review at the link below!
Sakaguchi also addressed rumors about potential remakes or ports of his older Mistwalker games, such as Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon. He expressed no interest in bringing these titles to modern platforms, despite recent speculation. However, he did express a desire to revive the strategy game Terra Battle, which was released for mobile devices in 2014 but is no longer playable.
Sakaguchi recently collaborated with Square Enix to bring his own company's 2021 mobile RPG title, Fantasian, to different platforms and consoles this year. Despite this renewed partnership, Sakaguchi remained firm in moving on from his past creations. Additionally telling Bloomberg that this is, in part, because he sees himself now as a consumer of the franchise rather than a creator. Sakaguchi also shared that he prefers to enjoy games without the behind-the-scenes knowledge that comes with development.
Mistwalker Files Trademark for 'Fantasian Dark Edge'
Despite having once considered Fantasian his final game, Sakaguchi is now working on a new project with his company, Mistwalker. He mentioned finalizing the story for this new title, and Mistwalker recently filed a trademark for "Fantasian Dark Edge." "We’ll say it’s something new, for now," he told Bloomberg, keeping details under wraps.
The Square Enix veteran left the company over 20 years ago. Sakaguchi's legendary career with Square began in 1983, when the company was just starting out. Inspired by popular RPGs of the time such as the titles Wizardry and Dragon Quest, Sakaguchi envisioned what would become the Final Fantasy series.
Sakaguchi left Square Enix in 2003, with his last major role credited in Final Fantasy X-2. Reflecting on his time with Square, he remarked, "Certainly 23 years changes a lot of things, and memories we have over time perhaps become more beautiful. The things we don’t like, or perhaps were bitter memories, slowly fade and take a backseat."
