Fable seems to have taken inspiration from the hit action RPG The Witcher 3 in combat, says journalist and podcaster Jez Corden. Read on to find out what else might be in store for the Fable sequel!
Fable Has CD Projekt Red DNA In Its Gameplay
May Be Inching Closer To Completion In 2025
Fable’s sequel will reportedly have combat mechanics similar to that of the multi-awarded action RPG The Witcher 3. The news was shared by Windows Central journalist Jez Corden in the latest episode of The Xbox Two podcast, which he is currently the co-host of.
Corden had the chance to preview some of the alpha gameplay footage of the game, though he is unsure if it’s footage from a more recent build or not. However, he said that the game looked "fantastic" and that "the game has CD Projekt Red DNA" in it. This is because Playground Games, the team behind the Fable sequel, got some developers from CD Projekt Red themselves to work on the title, and it turns out that one of those developers was the combat designer. He noted that you could tell that it takes a page from The Witcher 3, mentioning that "I’m not saying it’s a 100% one-to-one with The Witcher because it’s not right but you can tell that melee combat—the sort of pirouettes and the dodging and the dodge rolling and the seamless hack-and-slash into an execution—which looks really cool."
Even if it was supposedly just alpha footage of the gameplay, Corden praised it for being super polished and super good, noting that if it looked as good as it was in alpha testing, it would look even better now in active development. Additionally, he stated that there seemed to be a range of different weapon types for players to swap with, such as the classic bow and arrow, a giant mallet that could hit multiple enemies at once, as well as a levitation-type spell that could lift enemies up into the air and slam them hard onto the ground, allowing for players to master several fighting styles.
And keeping up with the humor of the series as demonstrated in the trailers, Corden recalled seeing a giant chicken as one of the enemies in game—which he noted that it may well have been a cockatrice, a popular bird-like monster present in many fantasy franchises. "But it actually just looked like a chicken, you know, that sort of comedic angle, but also not—it looked like a dangerous chicken." There’s also a werewolf enemy that introduced a rather unique way of luring it out; using the power of bacon, eggs, and sausages.
Corden concludes the quick sneak peek of the Fable development with nothing but praise and excitement, sharing that his "hype level went up a lot" from seeing all the footage and has left a "very strong [and] positive impression." He’s hoping that the high quality and expertise continues all the way up to the game’s full release which is slated for 2025.
