Remedy recently revealed that Control 2 will be an action RPG! Read on to learn more about this significant change to the series.
Remedy’s Announcements During The Markets Day 2024 Presentation
From Action-Adventure to Action-RPG
Control 2, the upcoming sequel to Control, will transition to the action-RPG genre. Remedy Entertainment, the developer of Control, repeatedly referred to Control 2 as an "action-RPG" during their presentation at the Capital Markets Day event, where they outlined the company’s vision and future strategies.
To clarify how Control 2 will differ from its predecessor, Remedy issued a statement to GameSpot. The developer shared: "Let people speculate, but suffice to say, Control 2 is a natural continuation of the first game, holding on to key tenets of storytelling and spectacle, but leaning even further into player agency, exploration, and RPG mechanics."
RPG elements such as player choice, game exploration, skill upgrades, and potentially open-world gameplay could be a welcome addition if implemented. However, Remedy has yet to confirm specific mechanics for the sequel.
Control is an action-adventure, story-driven game where players unleash chaos and defeat enemies using the telekinetic powers of Jesse, the game’s protagonist. While no specific details about the plot or its connection to the first game have been revealed, Control 2’s shift to an action-RPG is expected to bring exciting new features and gameplay mechanics while preserving the core elements that defined Control.
Mikael Kasurinen, the Game Director, also offered insight on Remedy’s website, hinting at significant changes in the sequel. "With Control 2, we’ll take another leap into the unknown," he said. "It’ll be an unexpected journey. It’ll take a while, but to put it mildly, this is the most exciting project I’ve ever worked on. It’s still early days, but it will be worth the wait."
Remedy’s Use of AI Tools in Game Development
During the same presentation, Remedy explained their views on using AI tools in game development. Mika Vehkala, Chief Technology Officer, stated: "Remedy has been using various AI models and techniques before the recent emergence and interest towards [it] happened."
Despite affirming their use of AI, Vehkala and Markus Mäki, Chief Product Officer, emphasized that this will not impact the people working with them. Instead, these tools are used to handle the "dull" aspects of game development, such as the motion capture process. Remedy even has a dedicated team member monitoring developments in emerging technologies, though the studio is not rushing to fully implement AI in their games.
While the use of AI in game development is a widely debated topic, it is common in the industry. For instance, games that rely on procedural generation, such as No Man’s Sky and Minecraft, use AI to quickly create assets and other game elements. Similarly, games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Red Dead Redemption 2 employ AI to enhance NPC behavior and movement. However, some developers, including Nintendo and Larian Studios, avoid using AI to preserve their games’ signature charm and handcrafted artistic and narrative designs.
With this revelation, AI will most likely play a supporting role in the development of Control 2. Vehkala added: "We are constantly working with our partners to look for opportunities that this [AI] can give. We are actually using some of these tools that are more popular and suit our needs at the moment."
