Chrono Trigger Director Curious of Fans' Thoughts on Remake
No Remake Confirmed, but Kitase Has Entertained Ideas for It
While there's no confirmation of a Chrono Trigger remake, game director Yoshinori Kitase openly discussed ideas of a potential remake of the critically acclaimed classic during a podcast guesting on My Perfect Console with Simon Parkin last month. While appearing there to primarily discuss FF7 Rebirth, Kitase raised the topic of Chrono Trigger himself, even expressing interest in how fans would like the game to be remade.
Kitase entertained several ideas, wondering whether fans would prefer a straight-up, yet faithful port of the original game to modern platforms, a graphical remaster, or a full-scale remake akin to the FF7 Remake trilogy project. The host noted recent successful remakes, such as another 90s classic, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening for the Switch, highlighting the importance of capturing the essence of the original game while implementing modern enhancements.
"I don't think it's necessary or, perhaps, good to fixate on recreating nostalgia in the modern age because if we were to bring games we have played back then and play them exactly as is, now, I don't think there will be sustained interest in playing the game," Kitase further commented through a translator.
Chrono Trigger originally released in 1995 for the Nintendo Super NES, and has been ported to different platforms including PlayStation 1, Nintendo DS, mobile devices, and PC, over the years. Though the Steam PC port of Chrono Trigger received several criticisms (mostly subpar graphical quality), Square Enix took steps to address these concerns. Additionally, they added support for a true 16:9 widescreen presentation, a feature previously absent.
