Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 Developed in Half the Usual Time

According to a Bloomberg report, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 (COD MW3) was rushed, contributing to negative reviews on the game’s campaign mode. Read on to learn more.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 was Rushed

Made in Half the Time Call of Duty Games Are Made

According to a Bloomberg report, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 was made in only less than a year and a half, half the time of the usual 3-year development period of previous Call of Duty games. It’s worth noting that this is the first big release since Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard last October.

This information came from members of the development team, who asked to remain anonymous as they weren’t allowed to speak about it publicly. The development team claimed that the production schedule was stressful for them. Some members of the team expressed their hope for their new corporate owners to not judge them for the negative reviews the game got after a shortened development cycle. Additionally, they feel betrayed that they had to work nights and weekends after being promised that they wouldn’t have to go through that again, after the same thing happened 2 years ago with the development of Call of Duty: Vanguard.

According to the report, the process was rushed since the game was made to fill a gap in the release schedule. There’s a Call of Duty title separate from MW3 that was set to be released this year, but was delayed. MW3 was originally meant to be an expansion to last year’s Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3, but turned into a full sequel during development. An Activision Spokesman denied that it was supposed to be an expansion, and said that it was a “premium game” from the start. However, more than a dozen COD developers claim that they were told otherwise.

Aaron Halon, Sledgehammer Games Studio Head, said in an interview that employees were under the impression that the game is an expansion because it’s “a new type of direct sequel” to the previous game, which carries over players’ equipment and loadouts from its predecessor.

The story for MW3’s campaign was finalized only in the summer of last year. Prior to that, the story was supposedly “a smaller-scale Modern Warfare spinoff set in Mexico that would be more achievable on a short timeline than the usual globe-trotting escapades of a full new campaign.”

Game8’s Take on the Campaign Mode

Image

While I have personally reviewed Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3’s campaign for Game8 and gave it a good score, other reviewers apparently have not enjoyed the game as much as I did. I personally enjoyed the gameplay, graphics, and sound Call of Duty games are known for. But it seems those things weren’t enough for other critics, with a common complaint being that the game’s story was half-baked and not good enough, something I completely disagree with.

Admittedly, some aspects of the game definitely felt rushed, like the Open Combat missions feeling just like DMZ, and the Campaign lasting only 5-7 hours long, which may feel short. But overall, I enjoyed the game. Read the review to find out exactly what it did well and what it didn’t.
