Call of Duty Comments on Skill-Based Matchmaking
After Years of Silence on the Controversial Topic
Skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) has been in Call of Duty since the original Modern Warfare game in 2007. However, since MW 2019, SBMM has been something that’s constantly been hated by players. The feature is intended to match players with other players of the same skill level. The issue at hand is that this is for all game modes, and not just ranked, which a lot of people think should be the case. The feature reportedly makes it hard to find enjoyable games as a solo player, and for multiple people in the same party with different skill levels. Due to this, reverse-boosting, or intentionally losing games on purpose to get into easier lobbies, has been a recurring problem in COD games.
According to @ModernWarzone on X (Twitter), an official Call of Duty statement was made about SBMM in COD, and it’s potentially the first time they’ve spoken publicly about it. IGN reached out to Activision to confirm, and a COD spokesperson responded with “(the tweet) stems from a live conversation from Call of Duty reps at an event, and accurately describes what was said. We will not be issuing anything further at the time."
Just over a week ago, Sledgehammer Games, one of the Modern Warfare 3 Developers, held a 3-hour long AMA (Ask Me Anything), which covered just about everything except for SBMM. While we don’t know what exactly they’ll discuss about SBMM, it’s a step in the right direction for them to start talking about it, rather than just completely being silent about it despite the backlash.
