RuneScape Designer’s New Studio Unveils "Brighter Shores"
Hundreds of Hours of Free Content Coming Later this Year
Classic MMORPG fans rejoice! Andrew Gower—famed co-founder of Jagex, the company behind early-2000s MMORPG hit RuneScape—just unveiled his studio’s newest upcoming title, Brighter Shores.
As revealed on Twitter (X), Fen Research—Gower’s new game development studio—has reportedly been working on this “cozy” free-to-play fantasy MMORPG for a decade, and is set to release the game to PC and Mac sometime later this year.
In Brighter Shores, players will be whisked away to the vibrant shores of Hopeport as its newest town guard but will soon find themselves venturing way beyond the safety of the town’s walls “as they learn of a greater threat across the fantastical world of Adothria.”
Brighter Shores’ Gameplay Features
Brighter Shores’ reveal trailer showed much of the game’s upcoming features, including a few that harken back to Gower’s more famous creation, RuneScape. The plethora of potential professions to learn and master is just one such feature, but the widespread world of Adothria and its mysteries also evoke the same fantasy feel.
A Multitude of Professions to Learn
The Brighter Shores reveal trailer showed a multitude of professions that the player could potentially learn, including cooking, smithing, mining, woodworking, and tinkering, to name a few. The true extent of Bighter Shores’ profession system is currently unknown, but if RuneScape was any indication, we’re in for a job fair’s worth of new professions in Gower’s modern take.
Discover Mysteries, Stories, and New Lands to Explore
No fantasy is complete without adventure, and Brighter Shores has it in spades. The trailer showed Brighter Shores’ promise of adventure, mystery, and “something new around every corner.” In addition to adventure, players can also discover new lands teeming with magic and fascinating wildlife, as well as an ongoing story that unfolds as players go through potentially hundreds of hours of gameplay.
More Things To Discover with The Premium Pass
While the base game is free-to-play, the yet unpriced Brighter Shores Premium Pass grants the player a whole slew of new features, professions, and areas to explore. Most notably, the player-to-player function is only available to Premium Pass purchasers, so if you're looking to get your Oldschool RuneScape on, you're going to want to get this premium pass as soon as the game is out.
