Apex Legends 2.0 Might Come Someday, Just Not Now

Apex Legends looks to be part of EA’s long-term plans as they have a major update planned for the game down the line. Read to learn more about Apex Legends’ future and important points from EA’s 3Q FY25 call.

Apex Legends Planned To Exist Long-Term

New Plans For Apex 2.0

A possibility for Apex Legends to get a sequel resurfaces as EA envisions the game to exist in the long-term future. EA CEO Andrew Wilson discusses in an EA Q&A Fiscal Call on February 4, 2025 how the company will approach Apex Legend’s future, including a major update that can be considered as "Apex 2.0".

Wilson calls the game "one of the great new launches in our industry over the last decade." However, he admits that the game has been heading in the direction that the company wants, and points out three core vectors that the game needs to improve upon.

Firstly, the company wants to focus on community support, particularly in addressing "quality of life, anti-cheat, and all of the things that make the core experience great." Second, the game needs to have a "more meaningful update of Apex as a broad game experience" and revealed that the team is currently working on that.

Finally, they expect to "continue to expand what this franchise is and how we support a core community of highly competitive players and new communities that want to come and experience all the greatness that Apex has to offer."

EA CEO Backtracks On His Previous Statement For Apex 2.0

Wilson previously made a statement on October 2024 regarding Apex Legends going towards not having a Version 2 but instead, building upon what they have currently. He gave his insights on the results of Apex Legends Season 22 in August 2024, which had fallen short of the company’s expectations. Due to the poor performance, fans have since then questioned the possibility of Apex Legends getting a sequel.

However, Wilson looks to change his stance as he confirmed that the team is looking to give Apex Legends a substantial update. He states "Sometime on a longer-term time horizon, there will be an even bigger, more meaningful update to that broader game experience. An Apex 2.0, if you will. This will not be the final incarnation of Apex."

He explained that the update would only come after the launch of the next Battlefield game, which is reportedly expected to be released in 2026. Despite the update being far down the line, he reassured fans that "the team is diligently working through what that would be."

Apex Legends continues to receive updates and will be going into its 24th season which will go live on February 11, 2025, and patch notes will be revealed on February 10, 2025.

EA Repurchases $1 Billion Accelerated Shares

The financial results of EA for the third quarter of fiscal year 2025 came with the company announcing a $1 billion accelerated stock repurchase program, signaling confidence in its long-term growth and a commitment to returning capital to stockholders. It also revealed positive and negative points in the growth of the company for Q3 FY25.

EA highlighted the success of EA Sports FC, winning Sports Game of the Year and having increased financial growth by more than 70% in the last five fiscal years. However, Q3 financial performance was below expectations, down 6% year-to-year. This came from Dragon Age: The Veilguard underperforming and Apex Legends not meeting the expectations of the company.

EA also introduced Battlefield Labs which "aims to address community trepidation and ensure the new Battlefield is stable and secure, given the scale and depth of the game." Initial testing will use servers from Europe and North America, and players can now register to have the opportunity to test the game.
