Rockstar Games Vice President of Writing resigns after 16 years with the company. Read on to learn more about his legacy at the company and apparent departure.
Rockstar Games' Vice President of Writing Seemingly Leaves
Sixteen Year History at Rockstar
Rockstar Games Vice President of Writing Michael Unsworth has apparently left the company after 16 years in senior and lead creative roles. Starting as a Senior Creative Writer in 2007, Unsworth has been one of the top minds behind some of Rockstar Games’ most successful titles - namely GTA IV and V, Red Dead Redemption I and II, LA Noire, and Max Payne 3.
The writer’s updated LinkedIn bio now says: “Mike is an accomplished writer who spent over 16 years working for Rockstar Games as a creative lead on some of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful video game franchises of all time, most notably Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption. He has a deep understanding of interactive storytelling, character development and open-world game design and extensive experience building and managing creative teams.”
Unsworth was one of the three lead writers for Red Dead Redemption 2. Dan Houser, another one of the three, also left the company in 2020.
No Official Announcement
Neither Unsworth nor Rockstar has mentioned anything about the departure. However, despite the winds of change in Rockstar Games, fans should still have a lot to look forward to in the long awaited release of Grand Theft Auto VI, presumably scheduled for 2024. Unsworth's departure should not negatively affect GTA VI much, as the game is already in its later stages of development and its storyline has most likely been finalized. It is possible that Unsworth will be credited with another writing role on GTA VI even after his departure.
Rockstar will likely find new talented writers for their future titles after GTA VI. However, whether or not they will be able to maintain that same signature style of storytelling that Unsworth contributed to their success is still in question.
Considering that the writer has updated his LinkedIn profile, we, as gamers, can only hope that Unsworth will land on his feet and continue crafting unforgettable storylines for beautiful games with other developers.
