Develops A New Lord of the Rings MMO
The Lord of the Rings, one of J.R.R. Tolkien's most well-known books, will serve as the basis for a new massively multiplayer online (MMO) game that Amazon Games and Middle-earth Enterprises of the Embracer Group will create and release. With this fascinating project, they hope to bring Middle-earth's rich and captivating setting to life in a persistent and alluring open-world MMO journey.
The upcoming game will draw inspiration from the iconic stories in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy, allowing players to embark on epic quests and forge their destinies within this legendary universe.
Currently, in the early stages of production, the development of this highly anticipated MMO is being led by Amazon Games Orange County, renowned creators of the popular open-world MMO title, New World.
When it launches, the game will be accessible worldwide for PCs and consoles, guaranteeing that users of different platforms can enjoy this extraordinary Middle-earth experience. While specifics like the launch date haven't been revealed, fans should expect future announcements to provide more information.
Pleased With The Partnership With Middle-earth Enterprises
Expressing Amazon Games' dedication to delivering high-quality gaming experiences, Christoph Hartman, the Vice President at Amazon Games, expressed gratitude to Middle-earth Enterprises for entrusting them with such an iconic and cherished world. The partnership with Embracer Group has proven fruitful, with their collaboration extending beyond this upcoming title, including previous joint efforts such as the Tomb Raider franchise.
This was not Amazon's first time trying to make a Lord of the Rings-based game. The Lord of the Rings-based project that Amazon previously had stopped abruptly. Athlon Games in Los Angeles received a license from Middle-earth Enterprises in 2018 to create a free-to-play game based on The Lord of the Rings. Leyou, which Tencent purchased, had established Athlon Games for that project.
Then, in 2019, Leyou and Amazon Games announced that Amazon would take up that project. The partnership ended when Tencent acquired Leyou, and it did so for legal reasons. According to an Amazon spokesperson, this new agreement has nothing to do with it.

MMO Game and Online Series
This exciting project marks another milestone for Amazon Games, steadily gaining game publishing and development momentum. Their previous accomplishments with internally developed MMO New World and the action RPG Lost Ark, developed by Smilegate RPG, have resulted in chart-topping success on platforms like Steam and Twitch, as well as the cultivation of vibrant and passionate player communities.
It is worth noting that a different company, Amazon Studios, is presently producing the eagerly awaited series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power for Prime Video. This program explores a different story set in Tolkien's Second Age of Middle-earth. It shows the various ways in which the fantastical realm of Middle-earth is being brought to life across several mediums but has nothing to do with the upcoming MMO game.
